Probably the most common headache experienced by adults is cervicogenic (which means “originating from the neck”). These occur when joints and/or muscles are dysfunctional in the neck. In a nutshell, there are specific joints in the neck that when they don’t move properly (i.e. they are stuck), the nerves in those joints will refer pain to the head, thus causing a headache.
A similar type of headache is a tension headache. A lot of people will relate this to stress, but it doesn’t have to be only associated with stress. Ultimately, these headaches occur when muscles in the neck (could be the back, front, or side of the neck) become tight. These tight muscles will refer pain into predictable spots in the head as well.
These headaches are often associated with poor workplace ergonomics, sleeping postures, or even prolonged sitting (like at a desk or watching TV).
