asked questions about chiropractic.

Chiropractors in Australia undergo extensive university-level education and clinical training to become registered health professionals. To practise, chiropractors must complete an accredited five-year chiropractic program at an Australian university—or a recognised equivalent overseas program that meets Australian regulatory standards. After graduation, chiropractors are government-registered and regulated, ensuring they meet strict standards of safety, competency, and professional ethics.

A chiropractic adjustment is designed to restore proper motion and function to joints that are “locked” or moving poorly. By applying a controlled force in a specific direction — either by hand or a specially designed instrument — the adjustment helps the joint regain normal motion, which can improve spinal function, nervous system performance, and overall wellbeing. Some techniques are fast and precise, while others use slower, sustained pressure. Every chiropractor is trained in multiple adjustment methods and selects the approach best suited to your individual needs.

No referral is necessary. Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners, so you can make an appointment directly. That said, many GPs do refer patients to chiropractors, particularly via programs like the Chronic Condition Management plan (CDM) for coordinated care.

Chiropractic care is widely regarded as a relatively safe and effective treatment for musculoskeletal conditions when performed by a qualified, registered practitioner. Side effects are usually minor and temporary, such as mild soreness or stiffness after an adjustment. Serious complications are extremely rare.

Chiropractors can help with a range of conditions including but not limited to:

  • Back pain, neck pain, and thoracic (mid-back) pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder, hip, and joint pain
  • Posture-related discomfort
  • Sports injuries and overuse injuries
  • Whiplash and tension-related pain

Most patients report minimal discomfort during or after treatment. Some may feel slight soreness or stiffness in the muscles or joints, which usually resolves within 24–48 hours. Adjustments are gentle, controlled, and tailored to your comfort level.

The number of treatments depends on your condition, its severity, and your personal health goals. Your chiropractor will provide a personalised care plan after a thorough assessment, which may include a combination of adjustments, soft tissue therapy, exercise and lifestyle guidance.

Yes. Chiropractic care is regarded as relatively safe and beneficial for all ages, from children to seniors. Techniques are adapted to suit the patient’s age, size, and health status, ensuring gentle and effective care.

Many private health insurance policies in Australia include chiropractic coverage. It’s recommended to check your policy for rebates. All chiropractors at Waverley Central Chiropractic Clinic are private health insurance and DVA, TAC and Workcover accredited.

Deep Tissue Massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and fascia, aiming to release adhesions (commonly referred to as “knots”) that can restrict movement and cause tension. It works through superficial layers to lengthen and relax deeper tissues, improving joint mobility and reducing tightness. While some pressure may be felt, the long-term benefits include enhanced movement, reduced pain, and lower risk of injury.

Remedial Massage focuses on assessing and treating muscular pain, dysfunction, and tension. Techniques can include deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, stretching, and soft tissue release. Remedial massage is tailored to your specific needs and is effective for pain relief, injury recovery, and rehabilitation.

Yes. We provide pregnancy-specific massage using a specially designed pillow that allows you to lie comfortably on your front. Treatments are adapted for safety and comfort, helping relieve common pregnancy discomforts such as back pain, swelling, and muscle tension.

Full-body massage: Approximately 60 minutes for complete coverage and optimal relaxation.

Partial session: Approximately 30 minutes, focusing on areas such as neck and shoulders, back, or legs and feet.

Many clients prefer a 60-minute session to achieve the greatest therapeutic benefit.

Massage is generally suitable for most people, but there are medical conditions that may make it inappropriate. Before your session, you will complete a health history form and discuss any health concerns or medications with your therapist. In rare cases, your therapist may recommend obtaining a doctor’s referral. All treatments are tailored to your individual health needs and goals.

We use hypoallergenic, water-based, nut-free oils, with non-allergenic options available for sensitive skin. Essential oils are also offered. If you have any skin sensitivities, please inform your therapist so they can select a suitable option.

Assessment & Consultation: Your therapist will review your health history, discuss your goals, and identify areas requiring attention. Some assessments or testing may be performed if needed.

Environment: Massage takes place in a warm, quiet room. Soft music may be played to enhance relaxation. You will lie on a table designed for comfort.

Privacy & Comfort: Depending on the massage type, you may undress to your underwear. You will always be covered with towels, except for the area being treated.

Your Role: Relax and make yourself comfortable. You can move or adjust position as needed. The session is customised to your comfort and needs.

Relax and focus on comfort. If your therapist needs you to adjust your position, they will guide you. Otherwise, move as needed. Some clients close their eyes and enjoy complete relaxation, while others like to talk. It’s your session, and you should do what feels most natural.

Frequency depends on your health goals, condition, and lifestyle. For chronic tension or injury recovery, 1–2 sessions per week may be recommended initially. For maintenance or stress relief, sessions every 2–4 weeks may suffice. Your therapist will develop a personalised plan.

Yes. Sports massage and deep tissue techniques can help:

  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Improve flexibility and joint range of motion
  • Enhance circulation to promote recovery
  • Minimise the risk of injury

These benefits can support training, competition performance, and post-exercise recovery.

Absolutely. Massage can be adapted for all ages, including children and seniors. Techniques are modified for safety, comfort, and effectiveness, supporting recovery, relaxation, and improved mobility.

Mild soreness or stiffness can sometimes occur, especially after deep tissue or remedial work. This is usually temporary and resolves within 24–48 hours. You can apply gentle stretching, heat or cold, and hydration to support recovery. If soreness persists, contact your therapist for advice.

Chinese Medicine (CM) is a traditional system of health care that has been practised for thousands of years. It focuses on restoring balance in the body, mind, and energy (Qi) to promote optimal health and wellbeing. Key components of CM include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, and lifestyle therapies. Treatments are personalised based on an individual’s health history, current symptoms, and overall constitution.

Chinese Medicine is often used to manage a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Musculoskeletal pain (back, neck, shoulders, joints)
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Digestive issues (IBS, bloating, nausea)
  • Stress, anxiety, and insomnia
  • Respiratory conditions (allergies, asthma)
  • Women’s health (menstrual irregularities, fertility support, menopause)
  • Immune support and chronic conditions

Clinical studies support the effectiveness of acupuncture and herbal therapies for pain relief, musculoskeletal issues, and stress reduction (Vickers et al., 2018; Lee et al., 2020).

No referral is necessary. Chinese medicine practitioners are primary healthcare providers, and you can book an appointment directly. For some cases, your practitioner may collaborate with your GP or other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care.

Initial Assessment: Your practitioner will review your medical history, lifestyle, and current symptoms.

Examination: Techniques such as pulse and tongue diagnosis may be used to assess your overall health.

Treatment Plan: Your practitioner will recommend a personalised plan, which may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle advice, or a combination of therapies.

Follow-Up: Treatment is usually provided over multiple sessions, with progress monitored and the plan adjusted as needed.

Chinese medicine is generally considered safe when practised by qualified, registered practitioners. Treatments are tailored to your individual health, and practitioners take precautions based on medical history, medications, and conditions. Acupuncture is minimally invasive, and herbal formulas are prepared following strict safety standards.

Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles, which may cause mild, brief sensations such as tingling, warmth, or pressure. Most patients report relaxation during treatment. Acupuncture is generally well-tolerated, and practitioners adjust techniques for comfort.

The number of sessions depends on your condition, its severity, and your health goals. Acute issues may require fewer sessions, while chronic or complex conditions often benefit from a series of treatments. Your practitioner will provide a personalised recommendation.

Yes. Chinese medicine is adaptable for all ages, including children and seniors. Techniques and herbal prescriptions are adjusted for safety and effectiveness.

Side effects are uncommon but can include:

  • Mild bruising or soreness at acupuncture sites
  • Temporary digestive changes from herbal formulas

Practitioners monitor your response closely and adjust treatment to minimise risks and maximise benefits.

Yes. Many patients use Chinese medicine in conjunction with Western medical care. Practitioners can coordinate with your GP or specialist to ensure safe and complementary treatment.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing (especially for acupuncture).

Bring a list of medications, supplements, and relevant medical history.

Arrive hydrated and well-rested to maximise the effectiveness of your session.

Mild soreness is common after chiropractic, massage, or remedial treatments. You may feel tender to touch for a few days, sometimes up to 3–4 days. This is usually part of the body adjusting to the treatment.

If you experience severe pain, sharp or catching sensations, numbness, or pins and needles, contact your WCCC practitioner immediately for advice.
